(Fort Pierce, FL) - Butch and Sherry Terpening, President and C.O.O. of Culpepper & Terpening, are proud to announce that the firm has been awarded the 2008 Grand Award from the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers. The FICE Engineering Excellence Awards program is designed to recognize outstanding contributions to the consulting engineering profession through comprehensive evaluation of projects by a distinguished panel of experts in related fields. Grand Awards are given to those projects that exemplify innovation, value and environmentally friendly design. At the state level there are numerous categories of engineering excellence awarded. Culpepper and Terpening received the award within the category of Water and Wastewater.

The Water and Wastewater project, submitted by Steven Doyle, P.E., Utilities Division Manager, was entitled "Site Unseen – A Trilogy", playing upon the fact that so large an undertaking was done underground. In an effort to consolidate and integrate several areas of the City of Port St. Lucie’s wastewater systems into one municipally owned and operated facilities, the City Utility Director and Culpepper and Terpening designed a transferring plan covering many miles of pipelines and a 4,820 foot bore underneath a segment of the St. Lucie River, a state Outstanding Florida Water. These pipelines had to cross State submerged lands, protected waterways, sensitive eco systems and endangered species protected zones. The permitting effort included the Army Corp. of Engineers, US Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Department of Transportation.

The directional bore portion of the project began December 2006 and was completed in April 2007, for a total project cost of $9.5 million.
